Comments:
An early view of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. This painting of Camelback Mountain compares favorably in both location, and vegetation, with photographs taken from the approximate location of today's East Fort McDowell Road near Papago Park. Very good condition. Painted on older "Atelier Panels" artist's board made by E. H.& A. C. Friedrichs Co. Has been lightly cleaned and is in a new frame.
Simply signed, Macintyre, this painter (A. D. Macintyre, Archie Dugal Macintyre) left behind several desert paintings seeming to date from c. 1930s to the time of his death in 1953. Very little information exists on this artist who is often confused with Washington State artist Emilie Macintyre (see Falk 1999:II:2130). Census records on file show Macintyre as a foreman on the Phoenix street car system in the 1930s. Later he married boarding house operator, Emma Macintyre. The 1952 Phoenix, Arizona, City Directory describes both Archie and Emma as living at 1542 E. Culver Street operating the "Macintyre Art Studio." Please review the online website AskArt for more information on this early twentieth-century desert artist. The artists step grandson (circa 2007) supplies additional information, including dates, on this artist and relative.
