Comments:
Very good condition. Good margins. Printed on heavy cream textured wove paper. The back of the sheet is toned from previous backing paper, never matted, the sheet is lightly toned along its edges due to contact with the original wood frame (frame included with sale). Neither detract from or effect the image. Most of these early, if not all of Shuster's prints, were created in the basement of the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe. In a quote presented in Chapman and Barrie (2008:136-137) Shuster paints a picture of the many other Santa Fe artists utilizing the basement. These would include among others: Joseph Bakos, Fremont Ellis, Willard Nash, Frederick Monhoff, and B.J.O. Nordfeldt. He describes crossing Lincoln Street to the Palace of the Governors where four studios had been set up for visiting artists such as George Bellows, "Robert Henri, John Sloan, Randall Davey, Willard Nash, Warren Rollins, Julius Rolshoven, Paul Burlin, Andrew Dasburg, and on and on goes the list."
The print does not warrant cleaning. A charming image capturing a sliver of time and activity that is long, long, gone.
To read an "Oral History Interview with Will Shuster, 1964 July 30" conducted by Sylvia Loomis (click here). (The interview provides some great information on Shuster's early years in Santa Fe and his involvement with other artists and the WPA.) There are some errors. For instance, one Native American artist is stated as being "Velino Shety" it should be "Velino Shije Herrera." And, as usual, please come back. Also recommended is Dispenza and Turner's book "Will Shuster: A Santa Fe Legend" (1989).
