Comments:
Excellent condition. Matted but probably has never been framed. In 1988, following the artists death in 1986 the Associated American Artists in New York City, exhibited 100 prints and drawings from the McClellan estate. In association with the exhibit a small, staple bound, unpaginated catalog was produced. Of the 100 exhibited items all are given basic descriptive information (title, date, media, edition size, and image dimensions.) "The Wise and Foolish Virgins" is number 26 in the catalog and is one of only a few that are illustrated.
John McClellan was primarily a Woodstock artist with most of his images being more social than ironic as this image certainly is. It has been assumed that McClellan produced approximately 130 prints. Few show as much humor as "The Wise and Foolish Virgins." Though no mention in biographical information informs us of McClellan visiting the American Southwest this image would certainly indicate that he did.
