Taxco Artemio Navarrete 980 Silver Brooch (circa 1936 to mid-1940's)
Very nicely made Artemio Navarrete silver brooch. Marked with Navarrete's conjoined AN near the center of the pin (Hougart 2006:126-127) with Taxco and 980 stamped on the each of the longer projecting pieces (see photos). Artemio Navarrete, a master silversmith helped William Spratling establish Taller de Las Delicias in 1931. In 1936 he launched his own atelier in Taxco called "Chichén-Itzá."
Artemio Navarrete is perhaps one of the most underrated master silversmiths in Taxco. It was William Spratling's discovery of this young artisan working in his shop in Iguala that led to Navarrete moving to Taxco where he helped to establish and guide Las Delicias (Morrill and Berk 1994:34). He would for most of his time at Las Delicias be one of two maestros overseeing the workshop.
